Josie

Josie turned her log and overtime slip in to the night watch commander.

The female lieutenant didn’t find any errors in either form.

“Have a good evening, Price.”

“Thank you, ma’am.”

She raced to the locker room to get out of her uniform and into her street clothes. Afterwards, she hustled to her car where she’d have complete privacy.

Once settled inside her hatchback, she pulled out the business card Detective Ferrari had given her. She punched in the number, knowing it probably was his office and he’d be gone for the day. She could leave a message, though.

Someone picked up. “Homicide Special, Ferrari.”

“Oh. I’m surprised you’re there.”

“Who is this?”

She identified herself.

“Is everything all right?”

“Well, something happened at Devonshire Station, and I wasn’t sure how to handle it.”

“Did you talk to your P-3, Bender?”

“There wasn’t an opportunity.” She explained they were overtime, and the PM watch commander was riding them for how late they were working, and how Bender had gone home before she got the chance.

“Why didn’t you go to the watch commander or ask a sergeant?”

“Because it involved Chloe Conrad and something she said to me while we were alone in the ladies’ room together. It might be important to your case.”

“Okay. I’m listening.”

She related the teen girl’s question about being blackmailed and someone dying.

“Was she joking?”

“Absolutely not. I got the impression that she was referring to herself.”

There was an extended silence on the line. Finally, he spoke.

“Do you work tomorrow?”

“Yes.”

“This is what I’ll do. You seem to have built up a rapport with Chloe, so I’ll arrange with the WC for you and your partner to go to the Conrad house with me. It’ll be before roll call. We’ll interview her and hear what she has to say.”

“Okay. Do I need to do anything more?”

“Nope. Just clue in Bender when you see him tomorrow.”

“Roger that.”

“And Price.”

“Yes?”

“You did the right thing by calling me.”
