Chloe

Chloe sat silently, her arms crossed and held close to her body. Fury raged within her, but she couldn’t let Eloy see.

“Where are we meeting the alibi guy?”

“Reseda Park.”

“I’ve no clue where that is.”

“I wouldn’t expect you to. It’s not your kind of place.”

“Who is he?”

Eloy glanced at her. “The less you know about him, the better off you’ll be.”

“When are we supposed to meet him?”

“He said between eleven and noon.”

“Are you crazy? I’ve got to go home. My parents will freak if they find me missing. They might even notify the police.” Fear coursed through her veins. You never should have gotten into this Jeep.

He pulled a phone from a pocket, no doubt a burner, and held it out to her. “Use this. You can assure her you’re okay.”

She turned her head away from him, then looked at him hard. “You’ve got to be kidding.”

He looked at her and shrugged.

“You expect me to call my parents and tell them, Hey mom, I’ve been out all night, but don’t worry. I’m with my boyfriend. You know…the guy I told you was twenty-one, but who is actually twenty-seven? I slept with him in a doper motel, and now we’re on our way to meet a guy who will give me an alibi for killing that cop the other day.”

He sighed. “Nobody likes a smartass. But if you think she’ll contact the cops, it would be smart to reassure her that you’re okay and will be home early this afternoon.”

“You promise?”

He gave her a big grin. “You can stake your life on it.”
