CHAPTER 6: The Foxtrot Diner

Sherlock walked into the Foxtrot Diner. He looked around, scanning the room for her. He could see Kato and Charlie with some other people from school. They were sitting at one of the larger booths. They smiled and waved at him. They didn't bother asking him to join them though. They knew he was going to meet Luna tonight.

Sherlock looked around some more and he saw her. She was sitting at another booth. She smiled at him and waved. He went over and joined her.

Hi!” she said happily.

Each table had a jukebox on it. You would put in a quarter and the main jukebox would play the song you chose. If more then one person chose a song it went in order of payment. Sometimes people would dance in the middle of the room. The table's sides had chrome around it and a marble sort of finish was on the top. He sat down across from her.

Their waitress was Mrs. Foxtrot. Her and Mr. Foxtrot owned the diner. Mrs. Foxtrot had golden red fur with white on her chest and around parts of her face while her lower legs were black.

What can I getcha?” she asked in sort of a drawl as she stood by their table.

She looked from Sherlock then to Luna, keeping her eyes on Luna almost as though she was deciding if she liked her or not. She wore an apron with her name badge attached and carried a pad of paper and a pencil in her paws.

Both Sherlock and Luna ordered ice cream floats. They talked about their classes as they waited for their order to come.

So how do you like Furthington Hills?” Sherlock asked Luna.

It's bigger than my hometown and I like it a lot. My roommate has lived here longer than me and she's shown me around.”

Chauncy and Bruto walked into the diner. Chauncy strolled over to their table and hissed.

Well look who's here Bruto,” he said angrily. “If it isn't the cat who can't meow.”

Sherlock glared at him and looked at Luna, feeling quite embarrassed. Luna looked shocked as though she could not believe he couldn't meow. Sherlock got even more angry, and he hissed back at Chauncy.

Didn't your little pal tell you?” he asked Luna. “He can't meow. It's rather embarrassing for a cat when he can't meow. What do you think?”

Really Sherlock?” she asked.

Sherlock's face turned quite red and before he could lose his temper, Charlie was by his side.

Chauncy, why don't you poke your nose somewhere else, like in a pie?” he asked.

Is it true Sherlock?” Luna asked him. “Is it true you can't meow?”

Sherlock's eyes began to glisten, and he took off out of the diner before anyone could see him. He asked himself What kind of a cat can't meow?
