Overstuffed Seat Cushions

Take your chairs from simple to snazzy with a new set of crocheted seat cushions! In this clever design, ravioli-like cushioned segments add plenty of comfort and a unique take on the basic chair pad.

PREPARE FOAM

Note: All four seat mats can be made from one piece of 15" × 17" (38 × 43 cm) foam.

Cut 16 foam rectangles, each 4½" × 3" (11.5 × 7.5 cm). Snip and round off all four corners to form rounded rectangle. Four inserts will be used for each seat mat.

MOTIF PATTERN

(For each seat mat, make 4 for top layer and 4 for bottom layer following color sequence chart.)

Ch 8.

RND 1 (RS): 5 dc in 4th ch from hook, (skipped 3 ch count as first dc), dc in next 3 ch, 6 dc in last ch, rotate to work in underside of foundation chs, dc in next 3 ch, join with sl st in top beg ch-3, do not turn—18 dc.

RND 2: Ch 2 (count as first dc throughout) dc in same st, 2 dc in next 5 sts, dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in each of next 6 sts, dc in last 3 sts; join with sl st in top of beg ch-2, do not turn—30 dc.

RND 3: Ch 2, or join new color with standing dc where previously fastened off, [2 dc in next st, dc in next st] 6 times, dc in next 3 sts, [2 dc in next st, dc in next st] 6 times, dc in last 2 sts, join with sl st in top of beg ch-2, do not turn—42 dc.

RND 4: Ch 2, or join new color with standing dc where previously fastened off, dc in next st, [2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts] 6 times, dc in next 3 sts, [2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts] 6 times, dc in last st, join with sl st in top of beg ch-2, do not turn—54 dc.

RND 5: Ch 1, sc in same st or join with standing sc, sc in next 4 sts, hdc in next st, 3 dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next 8 sts, hdc in next st, 3 dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next 13 sts, hdc in next st, 3 dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next 8 sts, hdc in next st, 3 dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in last 8 sts, join with sl st in first sc, do not turn—62 sts (12 dc, 8 hdc, 42 sc).

RND 6: Ch 2, or join with standing dc, dc in next 6 sts, 3 dc in next st, dc in next 12 sts, 3 dc in next st, dc in next 17 sts, 3 dc in next st, dc in next 12 sts, 3 dc in next st, dc in last 10 sts, join with sl st in top of beg ch-2, do not turn—70 dc.

Place WS of top and bottom tog matching shape.

SLIP ST RND: Work surface sl st from top through both layers between Rnds 4 and 5 approx ¾ of the way around leaving opening, insert foam and continue sl st until rnd is complete, join to first sl st.

RND 7: Working through both layers of motifs, join with standing sc in middle dc of any dc-3 corner, 2 sc in same st, *sc in each st across to next corner, 3 sc in middle dc of 3-dc corner; rep from * around ending last rep with sc in each st across to first sc, join with sl st in first st, fasten off—78 sc.

JOINING SEAT MAT SECTIONS

With RS tog of rectangles 1 and 2, join short edge with sc working through the outer loops only. Repeat for rectangles 3 and 4. With RS tog of both rectangles, join long edge with sc working through the outer loops only.

Border

RND 1: Join with standing sc in middle sc of any corner, 2 sc in same st, *sc in each st across to next corner, 3 sc in corner; rep from * ending last rep with sc in each across to first sc, join with sl st in first sc—144 sc.

RND 2: Working in back loops only, ch 2, 3 dc in middle sc of 3-sc corner, *dc in each st across to next corner, 3 dc in middle st of 3-sc corner; rep from * around, ending last rep with dc in each st to first dc, join with slip st in top of beg ch-2—152 dc.

RND 3: Sl st in every st around, fasten off leaving 6" (15 cm) tail—152 sl st.

FINISHING

Weave in end into first sl st in Rnd 3.


COLOR TIP

What makes these cushions pop? They employ the classic color strategy of choosing two shades (blue and yellow) that are directly opposite on the color wheel. For a quieter cushion, use two hues that are neighbors on the wheel.
