HOT IRON

Adapted from Jae Steele’s recipe “Hot Iron” in Get It Ripe.

2 TO 4 SERVINGS

INGREDIENTS

2 to 4 cups just-boiled water

Juice of ½ lemon

1 tbsp blackstrap molasses (see Note)

DIRECTIONS

Mix all the ingredients together in a large mug or teapot. Adjust the amount of water based on your taste preference. If you prefer a stronger cup, use less water.

Enjoy!

Note: Blackstrap molasses is a by-product from making white sugar; it’s all of the stuff that gets removed from the sugar cane. (Brown sugar is actually refined white sugar with a small amount of this molasses added to it for color and flavor.) A mineral-rich syrup, blackstrap molasses is a good source of iron. The vitamin C in the lemon juice helps that iron be better absorbed in your body.

Note: Jae Steele’s original recipe includes nettle leaves (the same thing as those pesky stinging nettles), which are a mineral-rich herb. If you can find it, try it, but it’s not completely necessary to reap the benefits.
