‘You have to do your best to step back and analyse the situation you’re in,’ Sam told the Boxer. ‘You need to try and stay calm, where you can. Take some deep breaths. That always helps. Then you need to look at the facts in front of you. Not what you think you might be seeing or think you know, but what you are actually seeing and do actually know. You can test your fears against the facts. Are they rational? Could there be another explanation?’

‘But often,’ the Artist said, ‘isn’t it what you’re not seeing and don’t know that scares you? It is for me.’

‘And me,’ the Lost Girl agreed.

The Athlete nodded. ‘Fear of the unknown.’

‘Or of missing something you should be noticing,’ the Artist said, and shivered. ‘That’s what scares me, anyway.’
