Chapter 30

Sheriff Hamilton eyed the envelope waiting for her on her desk.  It had been a while since she’d received something from David Thorguson.  With it being in a small envelope, it couldn’t be anything too bad, or she hoped at least.  Folded up inside the note were four teeth.  The note simply asked, “Did you miss me?”  That was easy for her to answer – no.

She called Alex before calling Agent O’Riordan.  “I thought you might like to know I received another package from David Thorguson.”

“I’ll be right over.”

“It’s all right.  It was teeth.  He wanted to know if I missed him, as if.  I’m getting ready to call Agent O’Riordan and inform him.”

“I wish you would have called to let me know.  I would have been there for you.”

“I know.  I will see you at lunch.  I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

Sheriff Hamilton called Agent O’Riordan next. “Agent O’Riordan, its Sheriff Hamilton.  I thought you might like to know I received a package from David Thorguson today.  It contained teeth and a note. The package was mailed from West Virginia.”

“I was right; he was headed to West Virginia then.  I haven’t received any hits on VICAP, though.  I’ll have Agent Manning double check.  Maybe someone didn’t enter it into VICAP or the body has yet to be discovered.  At least we know where he has been; now to figure out where they are going next.  Thanks for the call, Sheriff; I’ll send someone over to pick up everything from you.  Maybe we can get some DNA from the teeth and search through missing persons.”

“I’ll have it waiting at the front desk.”

AGENT O’RIORDAN WONDERED why David Thorguson and his accomplice had been so quiet.  What were they up to?

O’Riordan couldn’t remember the last time he actually had a good night's sleep.  All he did lately was toss and turn.  He had reviewed the files so much, that he knew them backwards and forward.  What were they missing?  He had been trying to map out their path, but with no bodies showing up, it was impossible.  Even David Thorguson rarely sent Sheriff Hamilton his little packages of mementos.  Did this mean there were no new bodies and they had stopped for now?  He hoped that this was the case, but he feared it was something much worse.

O’Riordan let his thoughts drift to Meghan.  Even though they had only known each other a brief period of time, she had him thinking of trying marriage again, even a kid or two.  They had never even talked about what would happen to their relationship once this case was settled, but it was at the top of his list.  He didn’t want to stop seeing her - of that he was certain.
