It is fifteen years since I wrote these essays. Given the breakneck speed at which news travels and incidents recede from memory, I wondered if this theme is still relevant. The world has grown smaller in many ways, with technology facilitating travel as well as communication with people located in places far and wide. Despite these changes, discussions about home and belonging, and notions of family and freedom remain at the heart of each immigrant or expat experience.
When I returned to India and settled into a job and an extended family, I figured that the NRI portion of my life was over. I expected to become just another Indian living in India. But life had other plans.
I encountered many changes in my professional as well as personal life. The latter necessitated yet another move out of India. I now live in Singapore with my blended family that consists of my new husband and two daughters.
In midlife, I am an NRI again. This journey is turning out to be very different from the one I undertook in my early twenties.
What’s next? Nobody can predict. However, I know one thing for sure. Wherever life takes me, I intend to have a book and pen in hand to chronicle the journey.
