28 JUNE 1593
Day twenty-nine
[Edward II’s] cry did move many within the town and castle… to compassion, plainly hearing him utter a wailful noise, as the tormentors were about to murder him…
RAPHAEL HOLINSHED, THE CHRONICLES OF ENGLAND AND SCOTLAND, 1577
[Matrevis and Gurney restrain Edward.
Lightborne kills him.]
Matrevis: I fear me that this cry will raise the town,
And therefore let us take horse and away.
Lightborne: Tell me sirs, was it not bravely done?
Gurney: Excellent well: take this for thy reward.
[Gurney kills Lightborne.]
