Sample Resumes

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, it is also the best resume-writing and job-search strategy. Sample resumes give you a great place to start, whether you're writing your resume from scratch or making your existing resume more effective.

Getting Started

In Chapter 9, you reviewed and analyzed several sample resumes. The following samples represent varied career fields, yet they possess characteristics common to all great resumes. Don't limit your review to resumes that match your goals. Find one or two that do, and then investigate a few more that strike you as particularly appealing.

illustration

Font sizes and word counts were reduced slightly to allow sample resumes to fit on the illustration pages. When creating your resume, feel free to write as much as will fit while maintaining a visually appealing document. Most resumes created on 8½″ × 11″ pages will contain more copy and lines than the samples.

Keep those pens, highlighters, and sticky notes handy! You'll make the best progress, and get the most out of your reviews, if you take notes as you go. Circle elements you think are particularly effective. Query the elements that don't work for you. Later, as you start writing your own first draft, you'll use these gut reactions to make your own resume as powerful as possible.

Also keep track of words, phrases, designs, and details you find appealing. When looking at elements, consider how well these reflect who you are. If you pride yourself on being professional and slightly conservative, don't worry about adding lots of flash and style to your resume. Likewise, if you want to convey an attitude of being creative and edgy, don't structure your resume to look overwhelmingly professional and dry.
