COMMUNICATIVE OBJECTIVES

Once you’ve mastered this unit, you’ll be able to use Chinese to:

1.  Buy meat at a traditional market.

2.  Go shopping in a supermarket.

3.  Purchase shoes in a shoe store.

4.  Buy pants in a clothing store.

5.  Discuss clothing and shoe sizes: one size bigger, etc.

6.  Inquire whether you can exchange something if it doesn’t fit.

7.  Request a better price and discuss discounts.

8.  Ask if you may use a credit card to pay for your purchases or if you must pay cash.

9.  Express similarity and dissimilarity: “Are shoe sizes in Taiwan the same or different from those in the U.S.?”

10. Emphasize your main point while conceding minor points: “It’s pretty, all right, it’s just too expensive!”

11. Talk about different kinds of stores and establishments.

12. Discuss different varieties of meat, seafood, and other food products.

13. Talk about various articles of apparel, footwear, and accessories.
