Eating and Drinking (III)
COMMUNICATIVE OBJECTIVES
Once you’ve mastered this unit, you’ll be able to use Chinese to:
1. Ask whether someone has eaten yet and propose that you go to a restaurant to eat together.
2. Discuss how the food is.
3. Ask for the check.
4. Offer to pay for the meal and respond appropriately when the other person insists on treating you.
5. Host or participate as a guest in a dinner party held in a private home.
6. Engage in polite conversation and rituals associated with eating and drinking that are common at Chinese dinner parties.
7. Explain to your hosts when they urge you to drink alcoholic beverages that you don’t drink, or that you’ve had enough, and propose drinking some other beverage in lieu of alcohol.
8. Explain and apologize to the hosts and guests if you must leave a dinner party early.
9. Make appropriate comments to the hosts and guests at the end of a dinner.
10. Talk about different kinds of meals as well as various foods, snacks, and beverages.
