OKLAHOMA!

Chad ambles over. He looks like a mad bear that was poked with an angry stick. This is hilarious.

I lean over to Ty. “We should put these two in the same corner and see which one comes out.”

He laughs. “I’d pay to see that.”

Chad looks down at us like he’s ready to bite both our heads off. JuneBug glares across the table at Chad. “What bug jumped up your butt, JuneBug?” Chad spouts off before I can try to make some sort of peace.

I look at Ty, whose head is down. He shovels in his food. Great idea. I do the same.

JuneBug slams her tray down again. “Excuse me, cowboy? I don’t believe I said one word to you today, so get up out my face.”

I laugh, and almost spray food across the table. I grab my napkin. Ty throws his head back in laughter.

“What’s so funny?” Chad and JuneBug yell at us. This just makes us laugh harder.

Mom shows up, eyeballs me, and taps her wristwatch. My laughter stops. “JuneBug. Five minutes and then we’re leaving. You’d better eat. My mom doesn’t mess around with the clock.” JuneBug plops back down in her chair hard. Silence ensues. We all finish eating.

I finish first and get up from the table. “Gotta go to the hotel room and do a last once-over. See y’all later.”

JuneBug jumps up and carries her muffin and coffee with her. “Wait for me.”

“What, no good-bye kiss?” Chad calls out as she starts to walk away.

JuneBug gives no answer. Instead, she rushes Chad and smacks him on the back of the head. I race back to the room to check every nook and cranny to be sure we left nothing vital behind.

Mom opens the room door. “Is everyone ready to go?”

We follow her down the stairs and pile into the truck. Mom says her silent prayer. JuneBug and I bow our heads. As soon as the big engine starts, JuneBug taps the truck ceiling. “Onward to Big Brutus.”
