Second Age of Storms, 48th Spring
Dear Princess Yi-Nereen,
If you are reading these words, I beg your forgiveness. The inability to follow instruction is a perennial failing of mine, or so I am told by various tutors.
Nothing has ever vexed me so much as your last letter. Sending no response was an abhorrent prospect to me, as was the idea of damaging your reputation. In the end, I felt bound to reply. You may discard this missive unread, as is your right, and in that case I have asked Courier Jin to convey my deepest apologies.
Though it may be too bold of me to ask, what social condition renders it indecorous for you to receive letters from a childhood friend? If you have met with some grave misfortune in the past nine years, I shall do everything within my power to render aid. I cannot forget the hospitality and kindness you once showed me, a lonely child far from home.
Your concern for my health, while received with gratitude, was cause for confusion on my part. Did someone lead you to believe my family left Kerina Rut because I was ill? It sounds like there was some misunderstanding. As a child, I was always in good health.
Sincerely yours, or deeply sorry, whichever is more appropriate,
Prince Kadrin
