Chapter 26

SKIN EXAMINATION TEST

Frequency

In addition to monthly skin self-exams, and yearly skin exams by a dermatologist. It could also be every three years for people between 20 and 40 years of age and every year for anyone over 40.

Necessity

Perhaps because of ozone depletion and increased exposure to the sun, skin cancer is currently the most common form of cancer. Unlike many types of cancer, the incidence of skin cancer is on the rise, particularly malignant melanoma — the most serious type of skin cancer. Melanoma spreads quickly throughout the body. Once it does, there is no cure, making early detection and surgical removal the only way to fight the disease. The most reliable method for detecting melanoma, basal and squamous cell cancers (the less lethal but more prevalent forms) is a visual examination of the entire body. Seeing a dermatologist rather than your primary care physician is recommended, as there is evidence that dermatologists are better able to spot melanoma.

Procedure

The doctor will examine your entire body, including back, buttocks, genitals, and soles of the feet, scalp, and underarms. Suspect moles include those with uneven borders, more than one colour, an asymmetrical shape, a diameter that’s bigger than a pencil eraser, or any that have changed since your last visit.

Deciphering the result

If your doctor finds an irregular growth, removal may be recommended to determine if it is benign or malignant.
