I began my escapades in etiquette as an organic outgrowth of my work in human resources. Working for major corporations, most of my seminar participants knew me prior to enrolling in a professional protocol course. When I began the Mannersmith business, many of my seminar participants where obligated to attend programs being offered in their workplaces. I knew that I would need to quickly win over those whose attendance was mandated. Using expertise, charm, humor, and the occasional double entendre, my audiences quickly relaxed. The biggest surprise was their comments at the conclusion of the courses. “That was fun!” they would exclaim, often with a mixture of shock and satisfaction.
It is my sincerest hope that in referencing and reading this guide, you too had fun; that you found the tips, techniques, strategies, ideas, and advice contained herein to be both enlightening and engaging. At its most basic and base level, etiquette is about making our encounters with others enjoyable. When you are confident in your attire, behavior, and communications, for any interaction, you show respect for yourself and for those around you. You are polite.
