Chapter 26

Hector drug himself from the freezing water seconds after Derrick pulled off, shivering so bad, his teeth chattered. Any longer and he would have been dead. For a couple of minutes, he leaned up against the iron rail, trying to catch his breath while sirens blared in the distance, seeming to grow louder as each second passed. Before him, lying near the edge of the street, Janet still twitched, her green eyes blinking sporadically up at the dark sky. To his left the two men he brought with him lay dead, their bodies riddled with bullet holes.

Hector shook his head, void of any feelings for his half sister, as he stiffly walked to his car. Actually, he wished she would hurry up and die. It would save him the trouble of having to kill her. He felt that this was all her fault. If she had set Jahad up like he told her from the start, his twin brother would still be alive; he had no doubts that Jahad had killed him. He stopped when he made it to his car and gave her one last look, cursing the day she was born.

They were never close, stemming from their childhood when Chico left the twin’s mother, Angelina, to live with Janet’s mother, who happened to live in the same building. Angelina, hurt and full of scorn, began planting spiteful seeds in her twin boy’s minds not long afterwards, which caused them to loathe their father at an early age. Two years later, when Janet was born, naturally some of their hatred shifted her way.

It wasn’t until Janet’s teenage years that the twins started showing an interest in their baby sister. At sixteen, Janet was beautiful beyond comparison, with an entourage of beautiful friends. Seeing the benefits, the twins used her until they sexed every last one of her friends. This started their one sided relationship. One sided because Janet had genuine love for her brothers, while they could care less about her. From then on, she was there when they called, to do whatever, whether it be hold their drugs and money or get close to certain drug dealers they wanted to kill. As the years passed, she proved to be quite useful, then Jahad came along and everything changed. Hector, being the closest to her, began to feel his reins loosen, but figured once he killed Jahad things would go back to normal. The problem was... Jahad wouldn’t die.

Hector turned the heat on full blast once he got in his car, then pulled off dialing the number to his lieutenant on Story Avenue. No one answered. His second call was placed to his lieutenant on Ftelly Avenue, where an unfamiliar voice answered.

“Hello?”

“Who’s this!” Hector spat angrily.

“I’m detective West from the...”

Hector quickly hung up, then dialed the number to his other spots, getting the same results. His first thought was that he had been raided, until he drove through each spot and saw police cars, ambulances, and body bags lined up along the sidewalk. It was when he drove through Story Avenue that the realization of what had happened sunk in. The park looked like an amusement park, lit up with red, yellow, and blue lights. News helicopters hovered over the scene shining bright white lights over the numerous body bags that were scattered everywhere looking more like mounds of dirt protruding from the concrete.

He pulled into Monroe projects parking lot when fear seized him at the thought of being a marked man. He put the Lexus in reverse and nearly collided with a parked car as he backed out. A deep sense of hopelessness came over him as he drove away. His brother was dead, his drug empire ruined, and he feared for his life to top things off.

Hector wasn’t one to be cornered though. His first obligation was to get his kids somewhere safe. From there, he would start planning his revenge, which would be like ice cream in the end, cold and sweet.

Six months later, all Five Heads were on the street together and the pandemonium begun. Dead bodies started popping up in the Bronx, Harlem, Brooklyn, and Queens, frequently, but unexpectedly, including the bodies of two police detectives. Drug spots all over the city were constantly being fire bombed and shot up. Some of New York’s largest drug dealers were being kidnapped along with their kids, wives, and mothers, and being held for Kings ransoms. New York’s underworld was in a chaotic state of turmoil. What made it even more frightening was no one had a clue where the assaults were coming from. The NYPD, just as confused as the drug lords, brought in help from the FBI to no avail. The Five Heads stay at Rikers Island produced an untamable beast hungry for power. And as a collective, this group would eliminate all flaws, even its own.

Don’t think it stops here; this was only the beginning. And if you’re wondering what happened next... Koran is what happened next; an untamable beast all unto himself.
