Techelles’s journey takes him down the Nile to Machda, an Abyssinian town, where he defeats Prester John (‘John the Great’), a legendary priest-king supposed to rule a vast empire; he then continues down to Cazates, a town near where the Nile rises out of Lake Victoria; he then invades the province of Zanzibar (not the island but an area on the west coast of Africa), and makes his way northward from there through central and west Africa (‘Manico’, ‘Byather’, and ‘Cubar’) across to Nubia.

There he subdues the towns of Stoka and Codemia, and passing through the Black Forest, or Nigra Silva, he destroys the town of Oblia. On Ortelius’s map the Nigra Silva resembles a body of water (hence the confusion of 1. 84).
