Elvis Presley – came third in an Elvis lookalike contest. Towards the end of his life, Elvis ate hamburgers at an obscure diner. The owners knew who he was, but respected his desire to remain incognito when he lost the competition.

Alistair Cooke – the presenter of Letter from America, came third in an ‘impersonate Alistair Cooke’ competition on the Radio 4 show Broadcasting House.

US TV newsreader David Brinkley – was once told that a record producer was looking for someone who could imitate his voice for a comedy record. Brinkley rang the producer and said, ‘A lot of people tell me I sound like David Brinkley.’ The producer told David he sounded nothing like himself, and hung up.

Dolly Parton – once failed to win a Dolly Parton lookalike contest. ‘I got beaten by some drag queen,’ said Dolly.

Charlie Chaplin – entered a Chaplin contest in San Francisco and failed to make the finals. He informed a reporter that he was ‘tempted to give lessons in the Chaplin walk, out of pity as well as the desire to see the thing done properly’.

David Bowie – came third in a David Bowie lookalike contest.
