Epilogue

“LAMES! T MOM!! HURRY!!”

I stare at Toast, not sure what to do. I open my mouth to scream again, but they both barge into my room. Uncle Coop sprints so fast he slides into my wall. T Mom is blurry eyed and still half asleep. Fair enough, they always sleep late on Saturdays, but not today. “It’s… Toast.” That’s all I can manage.

T Mom’s all the way awake now. I guess the fear in my voice is enough to kick her adrenaline into laser focus. She cinches her robe, and drops to sit beside me, her legs tucked under her. When she sees, she claps her hands over her mouth. She glances up at Uncle Coop and says his name through her fingers.

Uncle Coop is slower to join us. His focus is on me, like he’s afraid to look away and see what I see. “Ownin? Everything… okay?”

I shake my head and shrug and motion all at the same time. Finally, he takes a breath, and irritatingly slow motion, looks down at Toast in his bed.

Or should I say her bed.

Because Toast apparently just had seven kittens. I grin, and my voice drops to a whisper. Gotta let these babies get their rest. We’ve got a lot of adventures ahead of us. “Just wait ‘til you see the tricks I’m gonna teach them!”
