Note on Timing

In 1942 continental clocks were set one hour ahead of British ones, as they are today. In this narrative all timings, including those in German reports, have been standardized on UK time and the twenty-four-hour clock as employed by the armed forces, so that 9 a.m. is 0900, and so on. Nonetheless timings given in the text below for events in France are unreliable because of conflicting or imprecise evidence, sometimes only circumstantial. They merely represent the best guesstimates I can contrive.
