Daily miracles often go unnoticed, especially now that television, video games, movies, and flashy electronics are vying for your kids’ attention. Why not make it your goal to tune your kids in to the unique qualities of an extraordinary double rainbow?

Given their rarity, that could mean precious hours spent together waiting for the cherished event. Your kids will see that watching for miracles takes time and patience. While the anticipation builds, take every opportunity to describe the rainbow’s layered blend of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet and teach them to remember that combination by memorizing the Rainbow Man’s name, Mr. R-o-y G. B-i-v.

Talk about how Old Man Noah was one of the first human beings to view a rainbow. About how that shining arch was God’s promise that a flood would never again overwhelm the world.

Explain to your kids—while you’re huddled together on the porch after a rainstorm—that double rainbows are visible only when raindrops high in the atmosphere refract and reflect light back to us. Encourage them to keep their eyes peeled because what you’re looking for isn’t an everyday, or every storm, occurrence. The color sequence of a secondary rainbow is switched, exactly opposite of the primary rainbow, making it truly unique.

Rainbows are fleeting treasures, transitory God sightings. And double rainbows are at least twice as priceless. Keep looking and eventually you and your children will be rewarded with a front-row seat to a stunning light show. When that happens, you will have an opportunity to marvel in wonder at the primary rainbow’s reversed reflection, a remarkable double reminder of God’s faithfulness.
