Even adults have trouble grasping the concept of God. In some ways He’s like the wind, unseen but clearly there. His force can be felt. So can His love. You have the opportunity to help your children understand more about their Creator and why He’s worthy of their adoration.

Young observers learn of the nature of God when they see you respect and revere Him. Your children won’t believe your words unless your talk matches the way you live your life. Families get stuck in the routine rut of run-of-the-mill religiosity. You attend church, recite prayers, and do the same things all over the next week. That’s not enough unless you’re fulfilling God’s purposes. Deep down no one buys it. You and your kids hate going through the motions (or are so numb you don’t even notice). The only answer is to keep it real.

Tear down the façade. Be open about your need for God, your love for Him, and how much you rely on Him. Let your kids see your relationship with God, complete with the blemishes. Who likes admitting they’re weak and needy? But we are. Children, with all their questions and challenges, only serve to pound in the point more deeply. Your children should see that God matters in your life. And that you put Him first.

That’s done by reading His Word, and by praying and studying. Don’t make a show of it; just be consistent. Soon, you’ll see them following your lead. Loving God can mean putting your goals and dreams on hold to accomplish His plans. As parents you know exactly the cost of such love. And your sacrifices daily teach your kids what true love means.
