An excerpt from “The Steven McCartney Story: The Final Column”:

Let me share with all of you a message from Steven. He has been following some of the media brouhaha over his life story, and he feels that it is urgent that he set the record straight.

First of all, Steven wants you to know that some of the stories about him circulating in the media are sheer nonsense. He hopes that you will apply your good sense to your understanding of these tall tales. Even I, who have a bond of friendship spanning decades with this man, am not privy to all of the mysteries of his very private life.

Secondly, Steven has never been interested in gaining celebrity or wealth. He has said that our purpose in this life is to help others, to love, to forgive, and to spread wisdom. He begs each of you to do the same. Imagine what kind of world we could create with that sense of purpose.

Finally, Steven has sworn to me that his performance at this weekend’s gala concert at Irondale Collegiate will be his last public appearance. He has found that the recent blast of obsessive attention from the public and the media has seriously hindered him in his life’s work of helping others. At the end of the concert, he will disappear from the public eye and go back to living in the seclusion that he so loves. There will be no interviews. There will be no more columns.

If we want more heroes, we will have to become heroes ourselves. Each of us.
