The town of Burton-on-Trent (Burton-upon-Trent) still holds a town market on a Thursday, having been granted it charter by King John in 1200.


The cake-house, at the Serpentine was housed in the keeper’s lodge. It traded from the early seventeenth century, finally closing in 1826. It was famous for its cheese cakes.
