I will mention John Pizer for the reason that he was one of the very few Ripper suspects arrested at the time of the murders. His arrest followed the murder of Annie Chapman on 8 September 1888.
A Jew living in Whitechapel, Pizer was known as ‘Leather Apron’ because he worked in the leather trade, work that involved the use of long-bladed knives. He also owned a leather apron similar to that found at the scene of Chapman’s murder. He was supposedly seen arguing with Chapman before she was killed. Pizer not only had a stabbing conviction, but also displayed a well-known dislike for prostitutes. The reason for this hostility is not known, but it could be seen as a motive for murder.
However, a lengthy interrogation failed to shake Pizer’s solid alibi in relation to the Chapman murder. Later, he sued the authorities and received a compensation payment from the libel courts for unlawful arrest.
