Chapter 41

Levi

Had he just heard a car? Levi held his breath to listen. No, it was just the rain. Still, he was reluctant to breathe again, afraid he’d miss something. You’ve got to breathe, he reminded himself, or you’ll die. He took long, controlled breaths, trying to be quiet, trying to listen. But the car sound didn’t come again. Maybe he’d imagined it. It’s not like he was close to a road or anything.

Maybe he should try to get some sleep. Then morning would come faster, if he lived that long. For the millionth time, he wished his Gamp was still there. His loneliness was now the most painful part of his situation.

Please, God. Please send help. If I’m going to die here, please help me to accept that and do it bravely. And if I die here, please help them to find me quickly, so that my mother doesn’t have to wonder what happened to me. But I don’t really want to die here, so if possible, could you get someone here before I do?
