Epilogue

Ken rushed down the hospital corridor as fast as he could move without running. As he found Trisha’s birthing room, he was questioned by a nurse. “Sir, can I help you?”

“My wife is having a baby.”

She shot him a queer look. “Ms. Marks-Davidson arrived with her husband.”

Ken pressed his lips together over a wry laugh. “I’m the baby’s father.” The woman’s spine straightened and she lifted an eyebrow. Ken smiled. “It’s fine. Check the birth plan.”

Visibly shaken, the woman shuffled some papers on her desk, before picking up a form and perusing it. Her eyes widened and she nodded. “Go right in.”

He braced himself for Trisha’s pain-induced rage before opening the door but to his surprise, she was relaxing calmly in her hospital bed, watching television between bouts of being feed spoonfuls of chipped ice by Tommy. “You look pretty,” he said as he closed the door.

Trisha glanced his way. “Don’t lie. I look like a giant hippo.”

“You seem to be feeling okay.”

She lifted her fist and brought it down on her own thigh. “I had an epidural.”

Ken tilted his head. “I thought you wanted to go the natural route.”

Tommy laughed. “The plan changed a couple of hours ago when Trisha demanded, and I quote, “as much and as many drugs” as they would give her.”

He eyed Tommy. “I guess I should be glad I missed that part?”

Tommy pointed to a faint red mark on his arm. “She pinched the crap out of me, and I’m not even the one who did this to her.”

Ken snickered as he leaned over and kissed Trisha on the temple. “Glad you’re high.”

She grinned. “Me too. Did you pick up my dad and Gina at the airport?”

Ken nodded. “Uh huh, they’re in the hospital coffee shop on the first floor.”

“Good.”

As Tommy offered her another spoonful of ice, she opened her mouth and accepted. The cold moisture offered fleeting relief for her thirst, but the nurse wouldn’t let her have anything else. As Trisha swallowed, Ken asked, “Want me to take that job over for a little while?”

“Actually, yeah, if you don’t mind.” She watched Tommy handed over the paper cup and plastic spoon before plopping down in a chair near the bed.

Ken glanced at the t.v. and grimaced. “You’re watching a soap opera?”

She lifted an eyebrow. “Don’t

trifle with me.”

“I wasn’t going to change it. I just didn’t think you watched those shows.”

“I got hooked recently. More ice.”

“Yes, Ma’am.” He shoveled the chips her way and she gobbled them up.

She chewed and swallowed. “That’s more like it.”

A short, brunette nurse in pink scrubs walked in and checked the monitor hooked around Trisha’s stomach. “Your contractions are getting closer together. Do you feel them?”

“No.” She shook her head while placing her palm on her belly.

“There, you’re having one now.”

“Trisha looked at the monitor and then back at the nurse. “For real?”

The woman laughed. “Yes. It will be time to push soon. I’m going to go get the doctor.”

“Thank you.” Trisha leaned back in her bed and waved off the ice Ken offered her. Don’t let them force either of you out of the room.”

“They’re probably going to want one of us to go,” Tommy said as he stood.

“I will pitch the biggest fit you have ever seen if either one of you take a step toward that door,” Trisha screeched just as the doctor and nurse entered the room.

The doctor took one look at Trisha’s determined expression and shrugged. “I guess we can let both of them stay.”

Tommy and Ken stood on opposite sides of the bed as they held Trisha’s hand and mopped her brow. She gritted her teeth and bore down each time she was instructed to push. The epidural had dulled the pain to nearly null, but after several pushes exhaustion started to set in. Sweat dampened her hairline and her palms grew clammy enough that she pulled away from both of her husbands. She breathed the way she had been taught in Lamaze class as the doctor said, “Come on now! I can see the head. Push!”

Trisha grasped the bed railing as she followed his direction. She grunted and then gritted her teeth as the doctor instructed her to push again.  She struggled, using all the strength she had.

“Here we go. Yes. Once more!”

Trisha squealed as she forced another human out of her body. She collapsed back against her bed, panting as Ken and Tommy grasped hands across her. She blinked, observing their excited expressions and smiles as the wails of her newborn resonated all around. The nurse plopped the tiny boy down on Trisha’s misshapen abdomen and she reached for her son with shaky hands.

Todd had a head full of dark black hair. Trisha ran a fingertip over the damp locks and the baby calmed just before the doctor showed Tommy where to hold the cord so Ken could cut it.

“You did good, baby!” Tommy squeezed her shoulder as the nurse and doctor whisked the baby over to the cleaning and weighing station.

“Seven pound, two ounces of healthy baby boy,” the doctor announced before handing Todd back to the nurse.

Instinctively, Trisha reached out for her baby as the nurse brought him back. She took him in her arms and looked down at his squishy, pink face, and she loved him with all her heart. Tears slid down her cheeks as she cuddled him and he looked up at her through tiny brown eyes. “He’s so beautiful.”

“Just like his mom,” Ken said.

“And his dad,” Tommy added.

“Dads.” Trisha corrected.

“What’s he going to call us? It’s going to be confusing for him if we’re both dad.” Tommy looked to Trisha for an answer before turning his gaze on Ken.

Ken shrugged. “I’ll be papa.”

Todd grinned. “Then I’ll be dad.”

“Perfect.” Trisha stroked Todd’s cheek, encouraging him to breastfeed. She hissed as he latched on but relaxed as he suckled.

“Nice job, Mama,” the nurse said with a smile. “When he finishes do you want me to let the rest of the family in to meet your son?”

She nodded, wiping away her tears of joy with one hand. She looked at Ken. “Who all is here?”

“My mom, your dad and his wife, Tommy’s parents and two of his sisters. Cammy is coming later.”

As Todd slept in her arms, their loved ones poured in to ooh and ahh over him. Trisha’s heart thumped and she held back more tears, overcome by all the support their unique family had received. Any anxiety she had been harboring fell away as she basked in the shared happiness.
