In 1869, Major John Wesley Powell became the first to officially explore Canyonlands. He traveled from Green River, WY all the way through the Grand Canyon. Much like Powell, today’s visitors are inspired by the scenery and invigorated by the water’s power as they float the Green River or raft the 14-mile stretch of Class III – IV rapids of Cataract Canyon just beyond the confluence of the Green and Colorado Rivers. All public launches are located outside the park and private parties require a permit. Several Outfitters (see the What’s Nearby section) provide everything from day-trips to weeklong whitewater adventures.
