4WD Roads (CANY)

A 4WD vehicle unlocks vast portions of Canyonlands that few visitors get to see. It allows you to go backpacking without putting in the work. Your gear is in your trunk, and the only things strained are the muscles of your brake foot—and maybe your nerves as you slowly make your way up and down narrow switchbacks that ascend and descend precipitous cliffs.

Island in the Sky’s White Rim Road is a popular destination. Shafer Rim Trail near Island in the Sky’s Entrance is a great 4WD alternative route to and from Moab. Routes like Elephant Hill (Needles) and the road to the Land of Standing Rocks (Maze) are extremely technical. A backcountry permit is required to camp at designated sites along the way.

None of these roads are advised for winter driving. Fill up with gas in Moab. You won’t find any services in the park or backcountry. Rental vehicles are often restricted to paved roads, so look closely at your agreement or ask about it before you drive off the lot. Drive carefully; a tow can exceed $1,000.
