Rock Climbing: Sandstone isn’t the best for rock climbing, but climbers regularly come to Island in the Sky to test their skills against its towers and spires. If you’re interested in climbing Canyonlands visit the park website for a list of regulations. A permit is only required if you intend on spending the night in the backcountry.
Horseback Riding is another option at Canyonlands. Horses and other saddle stock are permitted on all backcountry roads. A backcountry permit is required for all stock-use, and all feed and manure must be packed out. Finding reliable water sources is a significant problem for hikers, and it is even more critical for horseback riders. Discuss where you might find water with a park ranger before departing, especially for overnight trips.
Stargazing: Just because it’s dark at night doesn’t mean there’s nothing to see. Canyonlands’ distinction as one of the most remote regions in the lower 48 has its perks, one being extremely dark skies. Don’t forget to look up on a cloudless night. The stargazing is phenomenal.
