Mark

I woke up early this morning, so I got in a few miles on the treadmill before I got ready to go to the shop. I texted Maria back last night, but she didn’t hit me back. Guess what ever it was she was trying to get in touch about wasn’t that important.

About 8 o’clock I pulled the Civic out of the garage and parked the van in it. Twenty minutes later I was just about to pull out of the complex when I got a call from Maria.

“Hello!”

“Good morning. I was wondering if you’d ever get back to me.”

“I was out of town, had a few things going on.”

“I guess. Anyway, I wanted to let you know I’ve decided to move on. My ex and I are getting back together. Actually! he’s moving in with me, so I wanted to know if you wanted to pick up the few things you left at my condo or should I drop them off. My guy kinda knows what you look like, so I’ll be adding the pictures I have we took together. He probably wouldn’t appreciate pictures of us on my nightstand.”

I laughed a little, but I’m kind of glad she chose to move on. The excitement I got when Val asked if she could call me sometimes told me that my heart was never going to be with another woman. I’ve loved Val for years although I’ve tried to even deny it to myself, and now that there may be another chance for me to be with her, kind of pushes away any thought of being with anybody else.

“If you want, you can just drop the box off at my doorstep. I’ll get it when I get in tonight.”

“Okay, I also like to know if I should change my locks or do you want to return the key I gave you.”

Maria gave me a key to her condo a few months ago when I woke her up to unlock her door. She wanted me to spend the night at her place but fell asleep. When the doorbell rang, I woke her up, she had to remember she invited me over. Later, she said it was just easier for me to have a key so I could just come over and slide into bed with her, but I never felt right having it.

“If you look under your big potted plant on your patio, you’ll find it. That key never left your residence.”

“Wow! That assures me I made the right decision. You never even took the key I gave you. I waited and waited to see if you were gonna give me a key to your condo, but you never did. That let me know where I stood with you.”

My breathing stopped. I know she’s right even though I’d like to deny it.

“Well, I’m sure you’ll have someone who will take a given key as serious as you do.”

“Yeah. Well, goodbye Mark. Don’t be mad if sometimes I forget to wave at you when I’m with my man.”

“Won’t be a problem. Goodbye Maria.”

We hung up and I went on about my way to work and I suppose Maria went on with her life with her ex, now new again boyfriend.
