Baking this crumble will fill your home with delectable apple and cinnamon scents. The sweet Fuji apples and fresh strawberries cook down so that their sugars caramelize and flavors blend to form a comforting bite. They’re then topped with a crisp crumble made of buttery pecans, warm cinnamon, and spicy nutmeg. This dish is a crowd-pleaser and pairs well with a dollop of nonfat Greek yogurt on top. Enjoy it warm or cold.
¼ cup almond meal
¾ cup quick-cooking oats
2 teaspoons pure maple syrup
1 tablespoon avocado oil
1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ cup pecan pieces
3 Fuji apples, thinly sliced
2 cups strawberries, quartered
1 . Preheat the oven to 400°F.
2 . In a medium mixing bowl, combine the almond meal, oats, maple syrup, oil, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, the nutmeg, and pecan.
3 . In a 9-inch round, oven-safe dish, put the apples, strawberries, and the remaining ½ teaspoon of cinnamon and stir until the fruit is well coated.
4 . Top the fruit with the crumble mixture and bake for 45 to 50 minutes, until the top is lightly golden, the fruit bubbles, and the apples have softened. Divide into 6 small bowls and serve. The crumble can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 4 days. It will get a bit softer as it sits; warm it up in the oven on broil for 5 minutes to crisp it up again.
FLAVOR TIP: You can use three of the same apples or mix a variety of apples for a slightly different flavor profile. If you want a more tart crumble, add Granny Smith apples. If you want a lightly tart but mostly sweet apple, try Honeycrisp. If you want a crisper apple, try Golden Delicious—but check the dish at around 40 minutes to see if the apples have softened; different apples may take different amounts of time to cook.
