paper cup popper

Pompom poppers are great fun and fantastic for hand/eye co-ordination. Even better, you can whip one up in no time at all – great for children’s parties or a rainy afternoon.

This project is a good way to reuse take-away paper coffee cups. First wash and dry them, then cover the outside with scraps of giftwrap from the recycling bin.

hints and tips

If you don't have any pompoms handy, make balls from screwed-up paper. It’s better to use something lightweight; that way your little one is not likely to leave a dent in your ceiling...or somebody’s head!

Step 1

Carefully cut out the base from your paper cup using a craft knife or a pair of scissors. (This step is for grown-ups only.)

Step 2

Tie a knot in your uninflated balloon. Using scissors, cut a small opening at the other end.

Step 3

Stretch the balloon over the base of your paper cup. You may wish to add a rubber band to hold the balloon firmly in place.

Step 4

To play with your popper, place the pompom in the base of your cup and pull the knotted end of the balloon. When you let go, the pompom will fly out of the cup. Try to catch it in the cup as it falls back down to earth.
