NORTH SHORE

Galena Falls spills onto the verge of the trail that leads to the summit of Mount Rose.

Mount Rose and Slide Mountain dominate the skyline of Lake Tahoe’s north rim, with a plethora of trails converging in and around the peaks. Scenic NV 431, the Mount Rose Highway, features spectacular views of the lake and provides access to Tahoe Meadows, a sprawling complex of marsh and grassland. Ophir Creek and Galena Creek are part of the Mount Rose watershed, each splashing down scenic drainages into the Washoe Valley. The Tahoe Rim Trail passes through the area, and the summit of Mount Rose is a valuable prize for any hiker.

A strip of towns lines the north shore, including Kings Beach, anchored at the junction of CA 28 and CA 267, Brockway and Crystal Bay (at the California-Nevada border), and Incline Village, a year-round resort town with all the amenities. Beyond Incline Village development is limited. Lake Tahoe–Nevada State Park protects large swaths of the mountain landscape, stretching from just south of Incline down the east shore.
