Acknowledgments

My time with Donald Trump was an experience like no other. It was not just because of the persona of the individual, although that certainly made it more interesting. But it is what he did to the presidential election process to break down years of political theory, traditions, and know-it-all politicians. (Yes, this is a positive.) His election instilled belief in the idea that anyone can be elected president of our country. He proved it. He broke the barriers and the static rules to show Americans that anyone can run and win the highest elected office of the greatest country in the world. I hope this inspires generations to come and encourages them to participate in the political process because their involvement does matter.

There are so many stories, anecdotes, and incredible moments that I could not include in this book simply because so much happens during a presidential election, a transition, and an inauguration. But without any doubt, it was one of the most humbling periods in my life. While they were not perfect, our Founding Fathers understood the importance of freedom and liberty and used the Constitution to ensure that our system of governance would be protected throughout our history. I have a much richer and deeper sense of gratitude for what they and those that followed have done for our country and the sacrifices they made that were required.

Over the last four years, the challenges have been particularly immense. Without the close support and counsel of family and friends, I would have been lost.

First, to my attorney, Tom Green, who treated me as a person always and not as a client, thank you. Your counsel and guidance helped me legally, but your huge heart saved me and my family.

To Anthony Ziccardi, Michael Wilson, and the entire team at Post Hill Press. You made this book happen and added excitement back to the project.

To David Vigliano for navigating more hurdles than anyone ever expected. Your experience, professionalism, and stellar reputation preceded you. I am grateful for your guidance, enduring the ups and downs, and help to make this a reality.

Mark Dagostino, although the project started much later than we both imagined, your commitment to this book never wavered. You were willing to listen and it is because of you that I am able to share my voice. Your insights and knowledge of the book world were invaluable. Your curiosity and enthusiasm made you a joy to work with.

Charlie, you have supported, mentored, and opened your heart to me for more than twenty-five years. You gave me my start and will never know how much I look up to you. You are, without a doubt, the kindest man in politics.

I am grateful to Tony for taking care of my family and helping me be the best version of myself. You are wise and full of compassion.

Casey Templeton, a gifted photographer.

Marc, you are one of the truest, most courageous, and strongest people I have had the pleasure of knowing. You have my gratitude and admiration.

To Shawn, who extended soccer, acceptance, and kindness. I am honored to be your friend.

Chris, our lunches have eased the burden immensely. I appreciate your friendship, laughter, and being a solid sounding board.

Scott, my college friend, and a true gentleman. Thank you for your steadfast encouragement, wisdom, blunt counsel, and for the inspiration for the title of this book.

Heather, your support and empathy meant everything to me. Your kindness, thoughtfulness, and ability to see good in people are unparalleled. I’d work with you again anytime, anywhere.

Mike, I am grateful for your relentless pursuit of making sure I had a friend in the Lord. I have learned so much from you in such a short amount of time. Your wisdom and tenacity to bring others together are humbling.

Tim, God works in amazing ways. Your friendship has been a wonderful gift. Thank you for your guidance, for helping me rebuild, and for keeping me focused on what is true. The band of brothers you have gathered in God’s name, who has done nothing but provide encouragement, prayers, and support, has been and will continue to be a blessing.

Tom Hodgkins, who chartered these turbulent waters with me every day. Who gave time away from his family to support our family. Who sat with me and Drew on one of the hardest nights of my life. You supported me in ways that no one else would even consider. Your loyalty, sincerity, and positivity were most needed. Thank you for never wavering.

A special thank you to our siblings and parents who endured through this with us and gave us nothing but unconditional love and support. And to my younger brother Paul, who walked every step of this journey with me. I am humbled and proud to be your brother.

Finally, to Drew and Julee, Mike and Caroline, and Travis and Heather, our group of friends who banded together to hold us together. You weathered this storm with us, made sure we were fed, watched over our children, sat with us through court proceedings and surgeries, cried with us, encouraged us, prayed with us, and carried us through. You even made us laugh in the midst of it all. We wouldn’t have made it without you. You are the very embodiment of selflessness. We love you.

It is hard to quantify the public humiliation and social ostracization that accompanies events of this magnitude. There have been moments where we felt so discouraged about humanity and other times that people’s unexpected kindness filled our hearts. To all of those in our community who brought food, gave us messages of encouragement, and loved our kids, you will never know how grateful we’ll forever be to you.

We walked through this journey in Faith. Many Bible verses encouraged and comforted me throughout this period, but one in particular I returned to time and again: Isaiah 41:10—“Fear not, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am the Lord your God. I will strengthen you, and I will help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
