21. Sell the Damn Boat

This suggestion is addressed to men. Women, for the most part, don’t have these toys.

Fifteen million Americans own boats. Anyone who’s ever been to a boating community on any weekend knows that only a very small percentage of these boats actually get used. Many are running up expenses in slips or storage lots around the country. The rest are taking up space in driveways or garages or the owner’s backyard.

The same thing is true for many of the other sporting and recreational gadgets we Americans collectively have spent billions of dollars acquiring: downhill and cross-country skis, scuba gear, backpacks, fishing tackle, golf clubs, camping equipment, you name it.

If you’ve reached the point where you’re beginning to doubt the bumper sticker that said “He who dies with the most toys, wins,” maybe it’s time to think about unloading some of them.
