Tyrant Flycatchers
Acadian Flycatcher, Empidonax virescens
Family Tyrannidae (Tyrant Flycatchers)
Size: 6"
Season: Summer
Habitat: Wooded riparian areas
The Acadian flycatcher is a member of the sometimes-confusing Empidonax group that breeds throughout the eastern United States. It has a relatively long, robust bill, long wings, a thin eye ring, and often the hind crown shows a slight peak. Its color is olive green above and whitish below with variable amounts of pale-yellow wash on the lower belly and a faint greenish breast band. The wings are dark with pale wing bars and edges to the tertials. Both sexes and juveniles are similar. Acadian flycatchers fly-catch for insects within the tree canopy, and may also eat berries. The song is a high-pitched, sharp peet-see, rising on the second syllable. The adult is illustrated.
