The American crow is a widespread corvid found across the continent, voicing its familiar, loud, grating caw-caw. It is a large, stocky bird with a short, rounded tail, broad wings, and a thick, powerful bill. Plumage is glistening black overall in all stages of development. It will eat almost anything and often forms loose flocks with other crows. The adult is illustrated.
