The house wren is a loud, drab wren with short, rounded wings and a thin, pointed, downcurved bill. Plumage is brown and barred above and is pale gray brown below, with barring on the lower belly, undertail coverts, and tail. The head is lighter on the throat, at the lores, and above the eyes. House wrens feed in the brush for insects and sing rapid, melodic, chirping songs, often while cocking their tails downward. The adult is illustrated.
