Wood Thrush, Hylocichla mustelina

Family Turdidae (Thrushes)

Size: 7.75"

Season: Summer

Habitat: Dense, mixed woodlands; suburban areas

The wood thrush is a solitary, fairly plump thrush with a short tail and a relatively large bill. It is rich reddish orange on the head, fading to a duller brown across the back and tail. Below, it is white with extensive dark spotting from the throat down to the flanks. There is a distinct white eye ring and a black-and-white streaked auricular patch. The legs are thin and pale pink. Sexes are similar. Wood thrushes hop through the undergrowth and along the ground for insects, worms, or berries and voice a beautiful, fluting song preceded by short, soft notes. The adult is illustrated.
