Wood-Warblers
Orange-crowned Warbler, Oreothlypis celata
Family Parulidae (Wood-Warblers)
Size: 5"
Season: Spring and fall migrant
Habitat: Mixed woodlands, brushy thickets
The orange-crowned warbler is rather plain, with a relatively long tail and a thin, pointed bill. It is olive green above and brighter yellow streaked with olive below, and the undertail coverts are solid yellow. It has a short, dark eye line and a thin, pale, broken eye ring. There is much variation in this species, from brighter forms to grayer forms, and the orange crown patch is rarely visible. Orange-crowned warblers forage for insects or berries in the undergrowth and voice a long series of descending staccato tit notes. The adult is illustrated.
