Wood-Warblers
Yellow Warbler, Dendroica petechia
Family Parulidae (Wood-Warblers)
Size: 5"
Season: Summer
Habitat: Willows and alders near streamsides, rural shrubbery, gardens
The yellow warbler is widespread in North America, and sings a musical sweet-sweet-sweet. It is bright yellow overall, with darker yellow green above and reddish-brown streaking below. The black eyes stand out on its light face, and the bill is relatively thick for a warbler. Clean yellow stripes are evident on the fanned tail. The female is paler overall, with less-noticeable streaking on the breast and sides. Yellow warblers forage in the brush for insects and spiders. The adult male is illustrated.
