Black-throated Gray Warbler, Dendroica nigrescens

Family Parulidae (Wood-Warblers)

Size: 5.5"

Season: Spring and fall migrant

Habitat: Mixed woodlands, chaparral

The black-throated gray warbler is a boldly patterned black-and-white warbler with a relatively thick, pointed bill. It is slate gray above, streaked on the mantle, and has clear white wing bars. Underneath, it is white with black streaks that merge into a black throat, and the outer tail feathers are white. The head has white patches below and above the eyes, and there are yellow loreal patches. The female has less barring underneath. Black-throated gray warblers actively forage through foliage for insects and voice a series of wheezy notes, ascending in volume, sounding like wee-wee-wee-wee-weet. The male is illustrated.
