A spot lights Ben’s wife at the telephone.

alma: Long distance, please. I want to speak to my mother. Hello, Mother? I’m calling from the bus station, I’m going to leave Ben.

[A spot lights Mother at the other end of proscenium arch at the telephone.]

mother: What’s the trouble, precious?

alma: He’s lost his mind and he’s lost his job and besides I never did like him.

mother: Come home to Mother, darling, come home to Mother!
