scene sixteen
“hello again”
A spot lights Jim advancing from one end of the proscenium arch, Bertha from the other. They stop short recognizing each other. They stare at each other with gentle, wistful smiles. Hawaiian music comes up.
bertha: Hello, aren’t you the fellow I met at the bar last night?
jim: That’s right. How are you?
bertha: I’m all right. Remember the girl that was with me?
jim: Yeah.
bertha: She disappeared.
jim: That sure is funny. The fellow that I was with has disappeared too. His wife just phoned my wife and told her about it.
bertha: What a coincidence, huh? I sure do wish that I could disappear!
[They both start to walk on. Bertha stops.]
Hey!
jim: Huh?
bertha: Let’s—disappear!
