Become a Star!

If you have HUGE star potential like I do, the best thing you can do is perfect your skills. One of the most fun ways to practice is by doing improv with your friends. Improv is a type of acting where everything is made up as you go. Sometimes the people you are acting with make up details, and sometimes the audience gets to choose. No matter what, it is sure to get a little crazy!

Improv Games!

Be a Mirror: Find a partner. One of you will be a mirror and copy everything — and I mean everything — the other one does.

Frozen Friends: This one is most fun with a large group of people. Choose one person to be the ice. Everyone wanders around the room until the ice freezes in place. The others should freeze as soon as they notice that the ice or other players are frozen. Do it over and over, seeing if you can freeze faster and faster each time.

Here Comes Jill/Jack: Choose one actor to be Jill/Jack, a waitress or waiter, then send him or her off stage. The other actors pretend to be customers at a restaurant, and they describe what Jill/Jack is like. After a few minutes, it’s time for Jill/Jack to appear. Jill/Jack must act the way she was described.

Honey Walk: Start by walking in place, then let the audience tell you what you are walking through. You must act like you are walking in mud or on ice or through honey — whatever is suggested.

ABC Game: Together with several actors, act out any scene you’d like. Working your way through the alphabet, each line of dialogue must start with the next letter. If someone messes up, the audience yells, “Sleep!” and the actor takes a rest. The other actors keep going until they are done or everyone is napping!

No matter what, when you are doing improv you must follow one rule: YOU MUST SAY YES! That means that no matter what the audience suggests or what the other actors say, you have to play along. Saying yes is the first step to being a great actor!

There are no scripts with improv, and that's what makes it fun!
