Introduction

fn1 The Dead Letter (1866) by Seeley Regester [Metta Victoria Fuller Victor] (1831–1885) is, strictly speaking, the first detective novel written by a woman. But as it contains a detective character with extra-sensory powers its historical significance is contentious.

fn2 Anna amended her second name to ‘Katharine’ when The Leavenworth Case was published.
