Chapter 2
“Everyone! Time to sign up for the camp competition!” Krista said, clapping her hands.
Krista was one of the camp instructors. Tall, thin, tan, and blond, she looked like a surfer girl.
Jill and Meg grasped their surfboards under their arms and jogged up the beach. About a dozen other kids gathered around Krista.
Krista stood in front of a wooden booth. The booth looked like a huge lemonade stand. Across the top, instead of “Lemonade for Sale,” the sign read “Surf Camp.”
That afternoon, an extra banner flew from the stand. “Camp Competition” flapped in the ocean breeze.
Jill sighed. The competition was for teams of two. She and her best friend, Mia, had planned to attend surf camp together. Mia’s parents decided at the last minute to take a family vacation. Jill had made plenty of friends during surf camp, but most of the kids were already paired up.
This was Jill’s third summer at the camp. It was supposed to be the summer she and Mia finally won the competition. Now it looked like she’d have to sit it out.
She saw Abby and Sara in front of the sign-up line, giggling. Of course they were going to enter. They’d probably win, too.
They weren’t the best surfers, but they were the bravest. And sometimes, they were the craziest. Suddenly, Jill had an idea. She turned to Meg.
Meg was busy twisting her long blond hair to get all the water out. “I’m so glad we don’t have to enter the competition if we don’t want to,” Meg said. “I think I’ll just watch from shore.”
Jill grabbed Meg’s arm and pulled her toward the stand. “I don’t think so,” Jill said.
“What do you mean?” Meg asked.
“You and me!” Jill said. “We’re going to be a team. And we’re going to win!”
