Most spiderworts need moist, well-drained acidic soil. Pruning to 8 to 12 inches after flowering can produce a second blooming and also prevents them from going to seed and spreading too aggressively. They may go dormant in dry soils in the summer, especially in the South. When they flourish, it’s helpful to divide the plants every few years.
Tradescantia is long-blooming and resilient, and there are many varieties available.
